We have been given as a present 2 weeks in Bruge. But I have been reading mosquitos are a problem and as I suffer bad reaction to the bites I want to avoid the months they are around. Tourist board said go in the winter, but that is no help.Anyone who lives there can you please help?

Very few people live in the centre of the small medieval city of Brugge, and you would be very lucky indeed to get anyone who does frequenting this website! However, as someone who has visited Brugge, I can only say the same as the tourist board. Mosquitos breed when it is warm, so while you should probably avoid June, July and August (even though it is not always as hot as it is right now), it is impossible to say what the weather will be like in Spring and Autumn: if it happens to be warm, you might just have the same problem then.
Unless coming in the winter, therefore - when there is a Christmas market and ice and snow sculpture festival - I can only suggest you stay in a modern, air-conditioned (so you don%26#39;t have to open the windows) hotel which is not right next to a canal, e.g. Novotel.

Thanks for replying so quickly.

I have been to Belguim many times mainly for walking. I have never seen a mosquito and until I read your post I did not know Brugge had a mosquito problem.

I live in Bruges and I can assure you: there is no mosquito-problem

Here%26#39;s one bit of information. We rented a house in the center (although about as far as you can get from the Markt and still be within the ring walls) the last week in August of this year. We opened the windows at night and did see 2 or 3 mosquitoes in the house, but never did get bitten. The house was directly across the street from the river.

I was in Bruges early Sept last year and suffered badly with quite a few bites. The mosquitos were in the hotel room and we weren%26#39;t particularly close to the canals.

I live in downtown Bruges and we do have mosquitoes in the summer. But not where they bite you when you have a beer outside etc, I would say I am careful about using mosquito screens in the windows when the sun is setting and I have anti mosquito devices plugged in at night. I also live in Dallas part of the time and I do get bitten there a lot when I venture outside at dusk. I have never considered Bruges to have a mosquito problem.
I would guess they stop after Sept or when we get the first cold snap.

Last month we stayed just south of the old town on a boat on the canal - at night, when we openned the windows and had our lights on, the mosquitos came in. However, in town we didn%26#39;t notice many mosquitos, even in the evenings, even next to the canals.

Curiously, after having no problem this summer, I am suddenly suffering from mosquitos in Brussels, and this despite the fact that the nights have already turned colder! Wet weather followed by a couple of warm days - it was nice last weekend - means we get a new batch of mosquitos. They do die off in the winter, though I don%26#39;t know how low the temperature has to remain for how long (it can%26#39;t be that low as our winters are not all that cold).
Anyway, people should realise that just because they don%26#39;t get bitten themselves, it doesn%26#39;t mean that mosquitos aren%26#39;t around: some people get bitten more than others, and I suspect some do get bitten but because their body doesn%26#39;t react in the same way, don%26#39;t notice it.
Incidentally, perhaps owing to its tropical experience in the Congo, Belgium has a very good brand of mosquito repellant called Mousti-Mug. You can get it from pharmacies in spray, gel etc. form.
