chocolate

where%26#39;s the best place to buy candy to take back to the united states?

I think you may need to define %26quot;best%26quot; (widest range, cheapest price, specific variety?) and %26quot;candy%26quot;: and it would also be a good idea to say where you will be staying in Belgium, assuming that you are coming here.

If you mean Belgian chocolates or %26quot;pralines%26quot;, you might find it most convenient to buy them at the airport on the way out of the country, since they would then be packed for travel, and the fresh cream ones (if you buy those) have to be eaten within a matter of days. The airport chocolate shops sell Godiva, Neuhaus and Corné Port Royal and you can find other brands in the duty-free shop (e.g. Côte d%26#39;Or). Otherwise, you will also find most of the chocolate chains in the Galeries St. Hubert (including the original Neuhaus shop) and rue au Beurre (Leonidas..) near the Grand%26#39; Place.

For the %26quot;grands chocolatiers%26quot; like Marcolini or Wittamer, on the other hand, you would have to visit their own shops in the Sablon, and the same goes for the royal chocolatier, Mary, in rue Royale (www.marychoc.com). My personal favourite is Frédéric Blondeel next to St. Catherine metro station, opposite the Welcome Hotel. It is also a café, so you can buy a selection of pralines to have with your coffee, to help decide what you might want to take home with you.

There again, if you want a chocolate Manneken Pis or something, the little shops near the Grand%26#39; Place will do you fine. And finally, for bars of chocolate, or candies, you would do best to look in a supermarket like the one in the basement of the City 2 shopping centre at Place Rogier.

I personally loved the one shop in Galleries St. Hubert. I can%26#39;t remember the name, but it was something like La Gourmand if I remember correctly? It was the one without the little chef guy in the window, but on the same side.
