Intl Drivers License

We are Canadian, do we need an International Driver%26#39;s Licence for car rental all inside Belgium?

Thanks!

It depends on the province of issue, but

I%26#39;m afraid that can mean that even an international license isn%26#39;t acceptable if your original license is not from Alberta, Ontario, Quebec or New Brunswick (from http://www.mobilit.fgov.be/fr/index.htm). These could, if you were living in Belgium, be exchanged for a Belgian license within a year of arrival, which demonstrates that you can drive on these as a visitor with no problem. However if the basic license itself isn%26#39;t recognised as valid, then neither is an international license issued on the basis of that one.

According to: voyage.gc.ca/countries_pays/…

%26quot;Canadians living in Belgium should be aware that neither a Canadian driver%26#39;s licence nor an International Driver Permit (IDP) are recognized. Only an Alberta, Ontario or Quebec driver%26#39;s licence can be exchanged for a Belgian driver%26#39;s licence. Residents of provinces other than Alberta, Ontario and Quebec should contact their provincial licence authorities to see whether they plan to negotiate reciprocal recognition arrangements with Belgium.%26quot; (New Brunswick has since been added)

I will be in Belgium for less than a week.

My drivers licence is from Ontario.

So .... does that mean we are ok?

thanks!

As far as I know, yes: but you should not rely on the general public for questions concerning officials matters, you should address yourself to the relevant consulate/embassy.

However, these things are reciprocal and I see from the website of the Ontario authorities that a Belgian license is accepted there for use for up to 30 days: mto.gov.on.ca/english/dandv/visiting.shtml

You will be O.K because if we come to canada and the staes our licence is o.k. and when canadians or people from the satas come here on vacation their licence is also excepted.

I very much doubt if you will have any issue with renting a car using your Canadian licence. Its generally up to the car rental company and usually where the original licence is in an unreadable for say in Mandarin or the like that you would need to get an international licence in English/French etc.

if this were not the case then I would not be able to rent a car in the USA (which I just did and visitied Toronto) without an international licence.

I hold a UK licence by the way which is effect an EU licence.

If in doubt contact th rental company or check their T%26amp;C%26#39;s on their web site
