Tipping housekeeping?

Do you tip housekeeping staff in Belgium? If they rely on tips for a living wage, as in the States for example, obviously I don%26#39;t want to be the nightmare guest. Is it necessary/expected? Help please!

Do you mean you are staying with private individuals? Because otherwise, you wouldn%26#39;t be a guest, so much as a customer. If you are staying in a hotel, it is entirely up to you - but Belgium has a minimum wage, hotel housekeeping staff cannnot be living from tips.

Incidentally, restaurant, bar etc. bills will already include a service charge (usually 15%) in addition to the VAT. So while it is common to round up a bit, locals do not leave tips as such.

Guest is the English term for paying customers in hotels; if that isn%26#39;t so in Belgium, then I agree the Belgian is more accurate!

We have a minimum wage in England too, but I wouldn%26#39;t want to try to live on it. If housekeeping are cusomarily paid only the minimum wage, then I probably will try to leave something in appreciation of their efforts.

Thank you!
