Amsterdam to Brussels Via Train

We are thinking of spending a few days in Amsterdam and then taking the train to Bruessels. Does anyone know how long the trip is and cost. What is the best way to book the train ride? Thank you.

Price depends on which type of train you take and whether or not you need to book also depends on that. You have the choice of:

a) Normal InterCity train, run jointly by Dutch/Belgian railways, cost (in the other direction but I presume it is the same starting from Amsterdam): €36.60 single, €73.20 normal return, €46.60 Benelux day return, €44 Benelux weekend return. You do not have to book just turn up at the station and buy from machine or (subject in the Netherlands to an additional fee) ticket office.

b) Thalys, which has a price structure similar to airlines, i.e. cheaper prices available in advance, and reservation-only so has to be booked in advance; see www.thalys.com.

Currently both types of train take +/- 3 hrs, Thalys 4 minutes less because it stops at 2 less stations than the IC train. Shortly however, high-speed track comes into use and Thalys times will come down to 2 hrs or so, and no doubt less than that in due course (for comparison, the same distance to Paris takes 1h22 - but Thalys is now the only %26quot;choice%26quot; available on that route, and it does not stop at all on the way).

Just to complete the already very complete information in the previous post:

In the Netherlands, the Benelux dayreturn is called %26quot;Super dagretour%26quot;, it is indeed at the price of €46.60 return, but you CANNOT use it before 9 AM ! So you can leave Amsterdam only after 9 AM with this fare.

This restriction does not apply to the weekend fare (which is still cheaper)
