I%26#39;m taking a friend away for his 30th birthday and want to go to either Bruges or Ghent - which is best for bars and a day out?

Bruges is a small medieval town, pop. 45,000 (120,000 if you count the suburbs).
Ghent is a university city with a student population alone of 50,000 and total population about 300,000. Use-it says it has 297 bars, see http://www.use-it.be/en/page/14/ghent/.

Sorry this is a bit cut and paste from other answers I%26#39;ve given but hope it makes sense and is useful!
Bruges is lovely, small, beautiful, touristy and very busy. Great bars., great restaurants, wonderful churches and galleries/museums. It is the sort of place I would recommend for a romantic or celebratory weekend
Favourite bars in Bruges would include
Brug%26#39;s Beertje (Bar), Kemelstraat 5 - 300 types of beer, busy, fun mixture of locals and visitors
De Kuppe, 19 Kuipersstraat - Leffe and Hoegaarden on tap plus 100 or so other beers - sometimes have music in the evening - good solid bar/pub atmosphere!
De Garre, De Garre 1 (down a little alley between off Breidelstraat near the Markt) - a little difficult to find but well worth it. A fantastic bar with an excellent choice of beers, including their own on tap, and good service. Also do a great plate of cheese and mustard!
Gent is quieter, more town-like, less touristy, perhaps not as picture postcard pretty as Bruges but that doesn%26#39;t mean it isn%26#39;t a lovely or architecturally interesting. It has some excellent bars and restaurants, great museums (the Huis van Alijn is fantastic!) and a laid back feel.
Our favourite bars when we visited were
Het Waterhuis aan de Bierkant (Groentenmarkt 9) - fantastic bar, in a fantastic location (overlooking the canal) with a fantastic beer menu but it does get really busy so go early or be prepared to stand
Café den Turk at Botermarkt 3 - a smaller beer selection than other places (but still pretty good), great atmosphere and a good mix of people, ages etc..
