Home base for 3 nights - Brugge or Brussels

Alright. listen, i know. this has been covered time and time again. but i am still hopeless.

I simply can NOT make a decision on where to lay our heads for 3 nights in October.

the Brugge bed and breakfasts seem absolutley enchanting.

Please bear with my rants here and PLEASE try to help with my decision.

Brussels i think we can cover the sights in a day. we are NOT art museum people.

We charm, architecture, canals, parks, people watching, drinking, and eating people.

We currently have our stay booked in Brussels.

and we are doing a day trip to Brugge.

My fear is, once we go to Brugge for the day, then I would be sorely dissapointed that we didn%26#39;t STAY there.

I am completely hopless and hapless in this process and would love your input. On the Brussels side, i fear in the evening we would miss the %26#39;Restaurant Row%26#39; side of things if we just did a day trip.

Please chime in with any thoughts or experiences!

Regards!

Will you be coming in and out of Brussels? If so, from what you describe I%26#39;d stay first two night in Brugges, then last night in Brussels. I just did two in Bruges and two in Brussels this past summer. Even though I%26#39;ve been to Bruges four times, it%26#39;s still one of my favorites as I tend to like smaller cities. If you are coming on the Eurostar, the journey into Bruges is included in the price.

julih, thats not so bad of an idea.

i%26#39;d be willing to put up with the minor inconvenience of schleping all the luggage back and forth and unpacking and whatnot.

We are arriving from Koln Germany, via the ICE train, into Brussels Midi, for the 3 nights.

then when we depart Belgium, to Paris, we take the Thalys from, again, Brussels Midi..

I booked the train tickets already, and they are not refundable, which is OK.. i%26#39;d have to change trains anyway, if i went to Brugge from Brussels.

I just truly can%26#39;t decide which would be the better place to camp out.

|||

If you%26#39;re a foodie and are looking for more people watching ops, I%26#39;d choose Brussels. I have a friend who loved Brussels for the food (he%26#39;s a critic for zagat) and really enjoyed the day trip to Bruges.

On the other hand I%26#39;ve heard time and time again people don%26#39;t want to leave Bruges once they get there.

Good luck in your decision!

|||

You%26#39;re the only one who can decide what you want to do, irrespective of what anyone else thinks, but it seems to me that the only way to avoid being disappointed in the way you describe is to stay in Brugge.

In any case, I am concerned about %26quot;On the Brussels side, i fear in the evening we would miss the %26#39;Restaurant Row%26#39; side of things if we just did a day trip.%26quot;

If by %26quot;Restaurant Row%26quot; you mean the rue des Bouchers, petite rue des Bouchers etc., which (apart from %26quot;pitta street%26quot;, rue du marché aux fromages, is the only %26quot;restaurant row%26quot; I can think of), this is an %26quot;experience%26quot; that SHOULD be missed, in my opinion! I have advised people time and time again not to eat there, and people who have, have reported in this forum on exactly the sort of scams the area is famous for (with exceptions, such as Aux Armes de Bruxelles and Chez Léon, neither of which have waiters outside accosting passers-by, which is a sign of a place that depends on tourists...). Note that this does not apply to the restaurants in the Galeries St. Hubert, several of which (e.g. L%26#39;Ogenblik in Galerie des Princes) are on the contrary highly recommended.

Of course, if you stay in Brugge you will %26quot;miss%26quot; better Brussels restaurants than those in the Ilôt Sacré, but if you don%26#39;t know which those are, it seems to me you aren%26#39;t going to know what you are missing, therefore it doesn%26#39;t matter!

|||

qaminari, you are exactly right. however, i am obsessive compulsive so it%26#39;s not easy for me to make decisions like this. but everyone%26#39;s input certainly helps.

We have decided to spend 2 nights in Brugge, then finish off with 1 night in Brussels before taking the Thalys to Paris.

This will cover my issue of picking one over the other.

Can i bother you for an excellent restaurant recommendation for our 1 night in Brussels. I had in mind T%26#39;Keldekerk.

Thank you for the heads up on Restaurant Row. I saw it in a Samantha Brown travel video and it looked charming and picturesque.

You mention there were a couple of high quality places there as well.

Where would you have me do dinner for that 1 night ?

Lastly, do you have any favorite dining spots in Brugge ?

thank you !

the best restaurant not only in bruges but in all belgium is called de karmeliet.

|||

Karmeliet may be a real experience but in my view those prices are way over the top even for a star rated michelin restaurant.

amazing so glad I looked at this forum..but I would like to add to the mix..we are spending 3 nights in Amsterdam and then planned to go only to Brussels, but my Parisian cousin said do not go to Belgium without seeing Bruges...our current plan ( not booked yet) is to go from Paris to Amsterdam and then to Bruges by passing Brussels..time constraints..I am concerned about the time for connections tween trains. about 20 minutes..will we be o.k.? also is 3 nights in Amsterdam right on...

Help

appreciate it ...

p.s. we will have been in france for 2 weeks prior to the above jaunt

|||

1) I presume you are talking about a connection in Antwerp (Antwerpen-Centraal) on the way from Amsterdam to Brugge, in which case 10 minutes would be enough, 20 is plenty. The same would apply, however, with respect to changing in Brussels on the way from Brugge to Paris.

2) This is the forum for Belgium, for questions about Amsterdam you need the forum for the Netherlands. But how long you should spend anywhere depends entirely on what you want to do there.

qaminari, don%26#39;t forget to flip me over a prime dinner spot in Brussels.. is %26#39;t Kelderke a fine choice? i know i can read reviews. but you seem to be the Brussels Godfather, so i%26#39;d like to hear your favorite spot..
