Itinerary needed - 4 days Bruges/Ypres!!!!!

Want to surprise my husband who is v interested in WW1 and has always wanted to visit the battlefields.

Given that it is a gift for him, would it be best to base ourselves in Bruges and to go accross to Ypres or better to stay near Ypres and visit Bruges?

Thinking of end November (Bruges Xmas markets) and staying for 3 nights. We will be travelling each way by ferry from Hull.

Neither of us have been to Belgium before and I%26#39;m not very au fait with WW1, so would appreciate advice!

Thanks in anticipation

If WWI is your focus, it would be better to stay near Ieper, for example, you will probably want to be there in the evening (20.00 hrs) for the Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate. Also, if you are coming by car, it should be easier to park in Ieper than in Brugge.

Incidentally, Ieper has its own Christmas market.

... but I have just found the dates and unfortunately this year it is starting in December (in the past it has been 29 or 30 November): railbookers.com/breaks/…ypres

Although not an answer to your question, you should consider adding the Atlantic Wall outdoor museum in Ostend to your itinerary. It%26#39;s less than an hour from Bruges, via public transit. Here%26#39;s their website, which seems to be a few years out of date:

It mentions a separate WW I and WW II tours, but we just took the tour they handed us (audio guide included in the price) and I *think* it was a mix of both WW I and WW II, possibly with an emphasis on the latter. They have pillboxes, tunnels, artillery, uniformed mannequins in recreated command posts, etc. The second half of the tour has much more of this stuff than the first half. I%26#39;d estimate the total tour is approx 2 hours.

Thank you so much for your advice and taking the trouble to check things out for me.

Think you%26#39;re right - Ypres would be best base.

Will also try to fit Ostend Museum in, especially as it%26#39;s so close to Bruges.

Thanks again
