I have %26quot;stolen%26quot; a posting from a few weeks ago, but I am sure NWKent won%26#39;t mind.

Typically prices are outside all of the cafes and restaurants so you can get a feel before you go in for the food, not necessarily for drinks.

Away from the real touristy places ball park prices are:

Beers

- Standard small draught beer €2

- Bottled beers €3 - €5

Coffee €2 - €4

A lot of bars do food which tends to be reasonable value, things like:

- Lasagne \ Spagetti Bolognese - €8-€10

In reasonable restaurants main courses are in the €15-€25 range, but a lot also do fixed price menus 2/3 courses for not much more.

- Mussels and Chips - €18 - €22

Chips from the 2 wagons in front of the Belfry are great. Middle size €2.5 (0.60c for sauce \ mayo)

Bars and Restaurants around the main square are relatively expensive. The fixed price menus look good value, but the drinks are higher priced which bumps the bill up.

If you move a street or two away the prices tend to drop.

Bars and restaurants around the Fish Market (Viz Markt) are generally better value than those in Markt square.

Personally I find the following good value:

FNAC (Markt) Record Store - Cafe on one of the upper floors.

De Republiek - Sint-Jakobsstraat - Cafe (Lunch \ early dinner)

De Gastro - Braambergstraat - Restaurant (Fixed price menus for lunch and dinner)

Da Vinci for Ice cream - Geldmuntstraat (€2 - €5)

Bars and restaurants around the Fish Market (Viz Markt) are generally better value than those in Markt square

I don%26#39;t have detailed costs, but as a point of reference, my husband and I were in Bruges for 2 1/2 days last month. We spent 260 euro on food and drink. We ate at moderate restaurants and cafes, and had some snacks along the way. breakfast was included in our lodging. We drank a fair amount of beer - most of which we drank in restaurants and cafes, some we bought at the store and drank back at our hotel. We spent 100 euro sightseeing, which included a half day bike tour, a climb to the top of the belfry, a canal tour, and a combo ticket for the chocolate and frites museums.

It really is worth repeating that prices go down dramatically if you move away from the favourite tourist areas - you don%26#39;t have to move far!

As another reply says, all the restaurants have the prices outside so you can judge before you eat. We use the good old snack standby of croque monsieur as a benchmark - in the markt square all the restaurants were charging 10 euros for an ungarnished (and unfriendly) one. In the T%26#39;Zand - the big square with the bus station - the snack bars were charging 8 euros and you got a little bit of salad with it. In the Bellman pub, next to the T%26#39;Pand parking (you will see lit signs directing you to all the parking garages) it was 5 euros, with a plateful of nice fresh salad accompanying it. OK, it might not be as pretty a place to eat, but for a fast and friendly re-fuel before setting out to walk the cobbles it can%26#39;t be beat.
