Bruges eateries/pubs

Does Bruges have anything similar to German Hofbraus/Bierhalle? Casual atmosphere, down to earth food, with wine or beer. Any famous or historic ones?

Hey sky muffin we will be in Brussels during Christmas and plan on (for the fun of it) eating at the Village Idiot only for the name, but it sounds like a fun place. Been to Hofbrau House in Munich but don%26#39;t know about comparison in Brussels. Have a great time.

Pubs/bars in Belgium tend to be smaller affairs than what I%26#39;ve seen in pictures of bierhalles in Germany - there are larger, modern bars in all the main cities, but the traditional pubs are usually in a medieval building (or building following medieval street plans) so can be tucked away, with one or two small rooms.

In Brussels, I%26#39;d recommend you seek out Delirium Cafe, and also Porte Noir (Google for details, and to see if that%26#39;s the kind of thing you%26#39;re after) - there will be plenty of good Belgian beer at both establishments, but it%26#39;s quite different to %26quot;typical%26quot; German pils and wheatbeer - stronger, more varied in style and flavour - though you can usually get some form of pils on draught in most places (e.g. Palm or Jupiler).

In Bruges, I%26#39;d recommend you check out Erasmus (it%26#39;s a hotel with a good beer bar), Cambrinus, and Brugs Beertje - the latter is very small, and although it%26#39;s got the best beer list in Bruges for Belgian specialities, it might not be what you%26#39;re looking for.

They%26#39;re all pretty down-to-earth places though. Many pubs/bars will only do snacks of cheese and cooked sausage - but some others will have Flemish specialities. Eating out, even in pubs, doesn%26#39;t come cheap (at least by English standards).

Skymuffin you may want to try Poatersgat in Bruges - its a (fairly large) cellar bar (converted from an old crypt!) on Vlamingstraat with an excellent beer list and electronic darts!

Electronic darts........I%26#39;m sold!

There are no large beer halls like in germany but you might want to try the Staminee de Garre, it is very small but excellend. Located in between the central market and the city hall.

I%26#39;ll be travelling with a friend who prefers wine over beer. Can I assume that if there%26#39;s beer in the establishment, there%26#39;s wine as well? I checked out some reviews about Staminee de Garre; I%26#39;ll put that on my list.

Yes - nearly every bar will do wine and other drinks as well. We went with my parents, who are non-beer but wine drinkers, and they were fine. Indeed they were overly excited that De Garre (another bar you should definitely try) served Kir Royale!

Hi skymuffin.

Your companion going to Belgium and NOT drinking beer is a form of heresey and he/she may be struck down by a thunderbolt from the God of the precious golden liquid.

Beer drinking is compulsory in Belgium !!!!!

Graham.
