Hola everyone, from Brugge! took the ICE from Koln this morning into Brussels Midi.. was expecting the worst.
happy to find that you can%26#39;t believe everything you read.
It was a very plesant station. and completely safe.
no different at all from Koln or Dusseldorf HBF.
from some previous reviews, i was expecting homeless people strewn about, garbage everywhere, pickpocketing and theft in full view, and police standing around and laughing at everyone.
Took us no time at all to buy our one way ticket to Brugge, from a helpful and friendly attendant.
anyone with any trepediations about stopping here, don%26#39;t give it another thought.
we had 2 huge pieces of luggage as well as 2 backpacks and jackets.

Oh the station itself is fine, sorry you had the impression that it%26#39;s not, it is the area of Brussels that Midi is in, is somewhat %26#39;colourful%26#39;

I have been there late at night, and did not think it would be pleasant to wander around outside. Lots of dark areas and youths hanging around.
Most cities have these areas, but not usually right beside a main arrival point to the country.
But my main complaint about Midi station is the poor signage, and low ceilings/claustrophobia.
Knowing that many people transiting the station are new arrivals to the country, I think the signs should be clearer, and easy to follow.

things have improved at zuid station over the last 12 months. there are regular patrols by a new security firm and always police (generally with dogs) present - there is a large police station opposite!
however, there are homeless people and drunks there constantly. the guy in front of the currently closed international ticket office nect to the eurostar entrance and the 5 or 6 homeless drunks at the exit opposite here
so whilst it is better it is still far worse than any other train station i know in europe
