I plan to stay at airport and train downtown(from tripadvisor forum suggestions).
will arrive late afternoon. What station do I get off at? are stores open late friday night? best restaurant to have dinner? are Christmas markets open?
Can I taxi back to airport hotel? How much?

The airport train (€3) stops at Nord, Central and Midi, it%26#39;s best to get off at Central, which is only 5 minutes walk from the Grand%26#39; Place. No, stores are not open late on Friday night, most close at 18.30; nor does the Winter Market start until 27 November. Of course you can take a taxi back to the airport, there are stands at the stations and elsewhere (Pl. de Brouckère), it will cost around €35.
I would strongly advise you to avoid the tourist trap restaurants in the rue des Bouchers, petite rue des Bouchers, rue Grétry area (with some exceptions given time and time again on this site); those in the Galeries St. Hubert, on the other hand, are fine.
