Is eating out in Ghent cheaper than Bruges? christmas too

We usually go to Bruges for one night before christmas, buy chocolate, chees and pate at the market and generally start feeling christmassy with iceskating and gluwine.

We are thinking of changing to Ghent this year .. are the restaurants in ghent any cheaper? finding Bruges has got expensive over the last few years. is it as christmassy and is there a market at the weekend where we could buy cheese and pate?

I can only answer the question about eating costs and not the Christmas one.

I went to Bruges and Ghent last month (Sept 2009) and didn%26#39;t really notice a sizeable difference in dining out costs. Of course, costs depend on a lot of variables and you can always find restaurants that suit your taste/budget.

I did like Ghent over Bruges though. Both are picturesque and lovely, but somehow Ghent feels more %26quot;real%26quot;. Just my opinion.

thanks for that. dont supose you have a hotel to recommend too? will probably go to the marriott because my friend works for marriott and we can get a discount but I prefer small quaint belgian hotels really (have stayed in D%26#39;Orangerie and Tulerieen with our airmiles and loved them both .. bit out of our price range this year even using miles

Sorry, but I stayed at the hostel De Draecke which is in the center of town.

You are going to want to stay at the Marriott which is smack dab in the middle of where it happens in Gent.

Plenty of food markets in Ghent, see www4.gent.be/gent/english/tourism/markets.htm and the Vleeshuis - worth visiting for the restaurant also - has a shop devoted to Belgian food specialities.
